Imperial is what I've been flying since 2.0 came out, primarily strikers. I was using a reaper and various tie/ln at first then last week I dropped the reaper and tie/ln for tie phantoms. So far I have liked how the two ship types mix. I just need to focus on better mine laying so I can bring my phantoms in to flank or vice versa.

I finished painting the ugnaught and without thinking about it I put the rebel saboteurs up for painting next.

For commissions I've got two e-wings and if I remember to get them another fang/star viper robotech duo paint scheme. Max and Mirya again, which looks awesome on the table.

If only painting could be my job instead of finding all these dead end ones. Which reminds I have to double check some emails about some hopefully decent jobs.

Danthulhuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09411670673153854159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3558624332767019097.post-68899273802614260582019-06-04T10:09:00.001-07:002019-06-04T10:09:33.171-07:00#102 Some painting done
I'd love to post some pictures though blogger seems to have other ideas at the moment.
Anyways, I've gotten a few things painted since the end of April. I did two commissions for x-wing miniatures: an Escape shuttle painted in BB-8 colors, a Star Viper painted in Zentradi and Mirya colors, a Fang in Roy Fokkers colors and another Fang painted in Max Sterlings colors. They came out quite well.

In the Imperial Assault side of things I painted the HK-47 units, the Death troopers, the Alliance rangers, the Wookie warriors, the Lolth cats and the Wing guards.

Next on the table are the Ugnaughts and the Hired Guns. I want to get through all the non-unique figures before I start the unique characters.

If blogger works again the I'll update this post (or make a new post).

I've been job searching and besides working haven't had too much time for much else. I've gotten a lot of Imperial Assault minis ready to paint and really hoping to get more gaming in once I find a new job. I painted some x-wing miniatures too, maybe start some commissions if I'm lucky.

I've played the rpg Unity recently and it's a fun system. My group had to do a bit of rules/content creation to cover some gaps in the base rules. I've been wanting to get a session or two of the new Wrath & Glory 40k rpg. Probably just try some one shots around an Imperial Guard kill team.

I've been doing a lot of cooking too.

Blogger app not working, I'll try to post pics later.
Yay. Anyways I'm still posting irregularly though that might change (or not). On to the Lego!

I just picked these up today along with Yoda's starfighter, which should be in the X-wing miniatures game but that's a whole other discussion. Starting with the:

TIE striker microfighter:
Build time: 10 minutes +/-
Build complexity: 1
Swoosh factor: high
This set is easy to build comes with neat parts and TIE striker pilot. It has a nice printed canopy piece and a printed control panel. The wings don't move up and down a whwile lot but that's alright since the model for X-wing miniatures doesn't move a whole lot either. Good stuff might buy another.

Imperial Troopers battle pack:

Build time: 15 mins +/-
Build complexity: 1
Swoosh factor: low (it only comes with a 1 trooper walker)
This is also an easy build, nothing particularly complex. It also comes with... Deathtroopers! I don't need to buy Krennic's shuttle... yet. The weapons are the usual stud shooters and it also has two vehicle studd shooters. Two regular Stormtroopers round out the set nicely. Good way to bulk up troop numbers, I want another set just to get more Deathtroopers.

The printing on the helmets and figures of both sets are nicely done and well detailed. The Deathtroopers even have a little color on the helmets too. Well done Lego, well done. I recommend both these sets.

Only thing is that they all have the same angry face.

The set is only 193 pieces though a lot of them seem like they could be useful for MOC builds. The overall construction is pretty solid except the lower engine has a little more flex than I'd like especially since it's a major part of the gimmick of the set, the opening side doors.

The minifigs are good. The printed details look pretty accurate and Rey has two faces, one stern and one smiling. Unkar's thug looks pretty thug-like and has crowbar. The set also has ten stickers that add details to a few areas. I don't like putting stickers on my sets though do those will hangout with the instruction book for the rest of time.

Build time: 25 minutes +/-
Design: 4/5
Difficulty: 1/5

Cons: the opposite side of the speeder has no detail to speak of, somewhat understandable since I don't remember seeing it in the film. It might seem minor though I see it as a lost opportunity to make the kit just a little better.

Ok, this one was a real monster of a project. The kraken itself was 14 pieces: 4 for the body and 10 tentacles. The ship base I'm not sure of, there might be 3-4 pieces. I only had to attach the tentacles after painting the body. It is not attached to the ship yet since it would be even more of a hassle to move or store.

The painting prices was simple just time consuming. The main colors are turquoise and black. The fleshy areas around the break I thought should stand out a bit so I painted those areas with a muscle tone. The turquoise was three stages: a base coat, a couple washes and some highlights. So far so good. The shell areas were painted black highlighted grey then washed black.

Attaching the tentacles was both easier and still more difficult than I thought it would be since there are doubles of certain tentacles. I placed them all down, matched the doubles and then sorted them so similar ones would not be next to each other. I managed to not mess up the attachment stage. I only had to glue one off then twice too. The majority of the tentacles were turquoise, blended at one end into the muscle part and blended with a dark blue at the tips. Overall a striking balance.

The sunken ship was a whole different problem. I researched boats, before and after sinking, to get an idea of wood color and what kind of wear and damage happen after sinking. So I started by painting a weathered boat then greening it up to show all the sea lichen that grows on them. The only shame is that the boat only had some barnacles and things on it. It still came out better than I hoped since I was fearing it would like a bronze statue with some verdigris (?).

After getting it all done I feel good about it. The process was an endurance test though, reminding me why I don't paint very many large models. I also painted the eyes in what I hope is a suitably creepy manner.

Tough to stay motivated the past few weeks. Figure I'll post up some pics of some of the star warsv miniatures I painted from the imperial assault game.

It's a fun game though I enjoy the campaign more than the skirmish side of things. I've picked up a few of the expansions. I'm privacy not going to be getting any more unless I find people who want to play regularly. Probably won't paint any new figures unless it really stars bothering me. Anyways on to pictures!

I plan on making a better post later...

The build went pretty quick despite having a lot of little pieces to connect and short through.

The suit itself is surprisingly articulate with some good joints. The hands were a nice surprise despite only having one joint they do have five fingers and look cool. There are some nice additional pieces too: 2 minifigs, a turtlebot and a small cargo pad.

Design: 5/5
Difficulty: 3/5

Build time: 1hr 15 mins (roughly)
Only con is that it could use a little more color.

This was a pretty big miniature. I'm not sure if I put more work into assembling him or painting him. I'm not quite pleased with how all the seam lines cane out in the end but at least they are not gaping chasms now. The paint job came out just about how I wanted it. I did a reverse highlight as best I could and when in good lighting ask the colors show up nicely. I did a wash of blue on his face to bring out the details and liked the look so much I left it as it makes a nice contrast to the body and claws.

I magnetized him so storage well hopefully be a little easier. Now into the rest of the Malifaux I have and I hope nothing else breaks off, Katrina's bow is a pain in the butt to glue back together...

*I thought I had a pick of both his halves maybe I'll put one up later.

Just finished these up this week. The human male is a ranger (dead currently), the human female might be a paladin (have not met her yet) and the gnome is a wizard, who uses a lot of fire spells and currently in the party.

I did some osl on the gnome since he's holding a fireball and thought it would add some extra sizzle.

Extra internet points if you can recognize the gnome's cloak. *I've made the cloak darker, next step would be black I suppose.

Painted this pair up a few weeks ago. The gold one came out ok, looks much better in person than in the picture. The black dragon came out a little better, the highlights and the wings I'm most pleased with and my friend was very pleased with both if them.

I painted this guy for my groups GM add a thank you during DM appreciation month (I know it was awhile ago). Anyways, this figure was really fun to paint as I rarely buy figured this big. Did the usual weathered bones look along with the scraps of clothing. I added some glowing runes to the little hammer on its arm since that looked like a good piece to show the magic enchantment that keeps it animated. Not a while lot else to say great figure I highly recommend it.

This is the Great Game Hunter Rogue fun the kingdom death series of miniatures. Just like all the other miniatures from this company it has lots of great detail and has a few small parts that are delicate. He actually went together really easy (first have session the gm broke his bow arm off :-P ). I assembled him then painted and there were no areas that were difficult to get to at all, very welcome in a small detailed resin mini. Simple paint job that came together well. I used a few different browns to indicate different leathers on the model. The vest & boots and pants & gloves had matching brown tones. The bow, the quiver and were all slightly different brown shades. The picture doesn't tell do it any justice but Obe day I hope to take better pics of most of the stuff I've painted. No one noticed a gave the crossbow an ivory inlay either.

I finished these miniatures up awhile ago and just had not found the time to write about them. This group was comprised of snakes from Wrath of Ashardalon, spiders from Castle Ravenloft and Hellhounds and bigger spiders from Descent. They were fun to paint up and the owner had a distinct scheme for each group.

I started with the snakes. A typical green and yellow coloring was asked for and I used it to explore washes with different colors. I washed the yellow under belly with brown ink and i used a darker green for the back area. I picked out the eyes with black and the mouth with purple. I used a little bit of yellow on the head and that pretty much finished the snakes. A simple paint job that I think looks pretty good. I have these same snakes and will try a different back color.
*the snake photo shoots a before and after for the dark green wash phase.

Since I had already painted some traditional Hellhounds my friend wanted these to be toxic/plague hounds. I was eager to try this since I had tasked about ding this on some hounds I have in my collection. I gave the fur a light gray basecoat and the flames a green basecoat. So far so good so I followed that up with a light yellow wash on the skin. I picked out the flames with a couple green layers and the mouths, eyes and claws with green wash. The only problem with these sculpt was the fur detail was shallow so the wash wasn't really that effective. Still the came out ok and have the desired effect.

The small spiders were an odd color request: snow spiders. It's a good thing these things looks like tarantula since I think that really helped give a snow feel. There are spiders that live in cold climates though I'm not sure how many of them are hairy. Anyways the trick with these ones was giving then a dark gray basecoat and then following it a few layers of white and then a final wash of dark gray. I then dry brushed the tips of the legs a light blue for an icy feel. Mission accomplished on these.

Last up are the big spiders. These also suffer from shallow detail so I knew I would have to do a little more to get those details popping. I started with a light gray basecoat. The end goal here was to make phase spiders. An excellent look which I suggest checking out. I followed this up with a dark blue wash on those areas that would be blue on a phase spider. Some white layering on the legs and body finished this areas. The blue parts I painted with a dark blue and then picked out the edges with a lighter blue. The tips I hit with a little black asking with the eyes. I think it's a very distinctive paint job and came out great.

This was a neat sculpt. Lots of little details in the armor and sword. I also liked how it's floating or at least gives the impression of hovering. Not much else to stay on that part. Good details and lots of character.

I started by blocking in the armor, outside of the cloak, inside of the cloak and the lower robe area. All armor sections started out black. I also painted the sword black at this point. For the inside of the cloak I mixed a nice dark bloody red. The outside got a coat of black. The robe I started off with a mid grey. My idea for the cloak was to make it look dirty and tattered.

The next step was picking out the armor sections with a simple plate mail metallic. I also hit the sword blade at this stage. Then I inked all those areas black then hit a few spots up with silver to just get some pop. The next area was the robe. I highlighted with a lighter grey then inked it brown and hit it with the a mix of brown and grey. I think it worked well in showing a really old piece of cloth. I also hit the inside of the cloak with brown ink to get some tone in that area. Then I started on the face. I hoped to make it stand out by making it a lighter bone color. I decided not to make it look too aged as whatever magic power kept it alive would keep something looking relatively fresh. I did give a splash of color in the eye sockets by dotting the center of each socket with a bright green.

Final steps involved picking out the hilt of the sword and the crown part of the helmet in gold and giving that some shiny highlights. The sword blade was next and I built up washes of orange to achieve a rusty look, especially along the edge. Whatever power the sword had in life death corrupted them was my thinking. After that I hit up the flag stones of the base with a dark grey and some black ink.
A pretty straight forward paint job that was easy to plan out and I achieved what the client asked for: a suitably aged Liche king with a nasty looking sword.

This guy is from the Castle Ravenloft DnD adventure board game. A lot of these figures are also in the pre -painted lines for DnD and seeing the naked figure shows that these mini's have great detail they just get covered up with the simple pre-paint jobs. Though I don't mind getting pre-painted figures for use as cannon fodder some of the bigger miniatures really could benefit from a more in depth paint job. Though recent Pathfinder pre-painted mini's do look pretty good.

So I had to primer this guy first after washing since I'm sure he was coated with mold release. I blocked out the main flesh areas and then my girlfriend pointed out that he was a little too symmetrical. So I went and repainted some the flesh areas to further break up the colors. The hardest part here was getting the metal staples. There are quite a few of them and they were a pain in the neck. The rest of the metal bits were easy. I think the best part on this figure is the left arm. It has flesh falling off and making it look a bloody mess was fun.

After all that I gave him a brown wash picked out some highlights and added some blood to various cuts. It was an easy paint job despite the staples and I think it came together really well.

One thing I don't like about a lot of figures is that they come with flat bases and they are usually glued on already. So that's why this guys base looks like cheap stone tiles. Some brown ink helped a little though I'd prefer a little texture. Most board game mini's come this way unfortunately.

I'm loving the Reaper Bones line of mini's. Great details, the paint sticks without primer (if you use Reaper paints) and they are cheap. I bought quite a few for the price of one from certain other companies. Anyways on to the wolves.

This was another commission that had a few supernatural creatures. I started with the werewolves because the main requirement for them was having different fur colors. They painted up great as usual. I blocked in the fur and the flesh of each one. I basically used the fur color of the previous for the flesh areas of the next going from white to gray to black. Then I washed then with some brown, picked out highlights and got the details.

The details focused on the faces and claws. The claws were easy, just a simple coat of black made them stand out nicely and this worked on the black fur since the flesh was gray. The faces consisted of painting the mouths a fleshy pink, the eyes a bright yellow and then highlighting the mouths a gory red. I also splashed some red on the claws just to make sure the PC's knows these wolves are not messing around.

I finished this ice giant queen a few weeks ago and finally decided to sit down and write about the process. It was a fun miniature to paint with lots good details. Reaper sure has set a high bar for affordable miniatures.

Step one: mainly blocking in the main areas. Black for the metal parts, leather for her clothing, a light grey for the skin and white for the club and hair.

Step two: putting the shade color for the metal areas, spent a lot of time building up the blues for the hair, the mid tone and highlights came out well.
Step four: her face, I added some blue to her lips to break up the color and pop out some details. I painted all the gems the same way, purple, and managed to give them highlights too. The club was also completed along with the dress. I think the blue for the hair, dress and club all came out well as well as looking different. I finished the base and used the same technique as the ice trolls.

A frost giant queen! The trolls turned out pretty good. The skin tone came out like I had hoped it would. Initially after the base coat I thought I might have to redo something since the skin was looking darker than I wanted. Once I put the highlights on and blended them some then the skin turned out how I hoped. The rest was pretty standard detailing. Leather bracers, metal cuffs, red eyes, the pelts and such nothing too unusual. On the bars I put some darker blue on since these are quite a bit bigger than the bars the bears had and I think it was a good decision.

Next up is the frost giant queen. I've started off by blocking off major areas: her skin (gray by request), metal parts, and leather parts. The next steps are prepping the club and hair with a dark blue then getting down to highlighting the skin. After the soon I'll get down to hurting the metal parts with maybe a gold depends on what my friend wants. I also might paint the gem stone parts as orange gems. Something to pop next to all the blue and gray.

I finished my dwarf cleric for a new dnd campaign and today I finished some polar bears. The bears are from the dnd board game Wrath of Ashardalon. After a light coat of primer they painted up quite nicely.

The dwarf wasn't quite armed how I wanted her so I purchased another miniature that had the right weapon and did a quick conversion to give her a hammer. I think it makes the right impression. The color scheme came together pretty well considering the only thing I knew I wanted was for her to have a purple tunic. The armor of course is the standard metal and then I hit her gloves and boots with a leather color and washed those brown. Some little details on her neck and the hammer rounded out how detailed I wanted to get. I also left her eyes white since I figured she was full of divine energy. The skin tone came out exactly how I wanted, I didn't think it was going to look that good honestly. She's the fourth or fifth model I've tried a darker skin tone with and I'm going to try to do more varied skin in the future.

The polar bears came together better than I expected. The fur was a combo of gray for the shadow, a cream for the base and white for highlights and touch ups. I'm not quite sure if polar bear claws are black I just thought some color in there would make the fur pop a bit better. The mouths were painted with liche purple. I'm really getting my money's worth with that paint and it's over ten years old! I'm going to be heartbroken when it's gone. Good thing I only use it for mouths and guts. The black eyes really make them look menacing and give them a sinister intelligence look. The bases were a first for me as well. I've never painted ice before so I hope those look alright.

Continuing on I've added more color and done some washes on the larger color areas and I've also figured on simplifying the wing pattern by painting half the feathers black on the under side. On the top of the wings I only painted the larger feathers half black and did some highlighting on the front areas. The beak got some detail with the main areas getting black (like a real hawk) and then getting the interior fleshy and putting some yellow on small parts.

The main body, with and without feathers, received basecoats of a medium brown and golden skin. The feather area was washed with a dark brown and highlighted with sandy brown. The lion part was shaded lighty with sandy brown and then highlighted with creamy ivory.

The claws got a base of yellow shaded with saffron yellow. The claws I painted black and then the base for a light gey cost followed with a dark grey wash. All said and done I think it came out great! The last pic is a mini I modified to be my character in a 5th edition campaign.

Figured I would write this up real quick while I give the paint time to dry. Thus griffon is the largest miniature I've painted in awhile. I've blocked the main colors and plan to do some washes with darker colors and then highlights. Nothing incredibly fancy until I get to the wing patterns! That was my biggest reason paint this creature. I looked at a lot of hawk wings (the one request when painting this was to use a hawk as reference instead of an eagle) and found a couple I plan to use as a base for the wing patterns.

I will be dry brushing the black on as I didn't see anything in any of the photos that lead me to believe any of the feathers should be solid black. With such a simple pallet of colors I'm really hoping the washes and highlights will make the colors pop while not making the figure look too busy. One particular picture I saw showed the under wing feather tips being black and I plan to use that particular detail for this figure. Other than that the rest of the wings will probably follow the standard pattern I have seen in midday of the pictures.

Won't be taking up to much time with this post. Short and sweet. A matte coat on the succubus toned down some of the shading on the hair and smoothed out the skin so I think that's a win. I finished all the details, shading and highlights on the Spectator and I really like how the eyes came out. I decided to add pupils to the small eyes otherwise they just looked like little blobs of green. Not much else to add, enjoy the pics!
Oh, also made the daredevil fig bald per the owners request. Not the cleanest paint job, I think it works though.
